  • When Vasco da Gama arrived with his fleets off the coast of Inhambane, Mozambique in 1498, the odyssey of the coconut to East Africa had begun centuries before. The story of the coconut palm and its geographical spread around the globe is one in which evolution, immigration, trade, and the forces of nature all play a part. The remarkable evolution and botanical traits of the coconut palm help to explain its durability, diversity and distribution – characteristics that evolved during the coconut’s odyssey from Gondwana, the great landmass of the Southern Hemisphere which began to break up around 80 million years ago. The ancestral coconut grew on the northern coasts of Gondwana fragments.

  • What is Coconut? The coconut is a fruit of the coconut palm, which is an important member of the palm family. The coconut palm can grow up to 30m tall and is sometimes referred as “The Tree of Life” this is because every part of the coconut palm can be utilized in some way. The coconut has a smooth green covering. The outer shell, which is one to two inches thick, is made of a fibrous husk and the inner shell is brown and hard.

  • The plantation is located in Maxixe (it’s pronounced ‘Ma-sheesh’) which is in Ihambane province of Mozambique. Mozambique is situated on the eastern coast of Africa, and it borders on Tanzania to the north, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe to the west and South Africa and Swaziland to the south. The capital of Mozambique is Maputo. Mozambique has an area of 799,390 Km², of which 786,390 Km² are firm land and 13,000 Km² of interior waters.
